The Holler - 2025_10

In a nutshell

When Betsy created the Grassy Creek calendar many years ago she labeled October as the "Most Beautiful Family Month." (Actually, it was probably something more elegant than that, but I'm getting old folks, I can't quite remember.) In any case, it was meant to say that no one should hog the cabins. And it's true. It's the most beautiful time of year.

October is when you go up on a cool morning that turns hot by mid afternoon and enjoy the silent fireworks of autumn. I hope you can all go up fill your lungs with fresh air, your eyes with color, and your souls with peace this month.

In other news, we had a small but fabulous family party in August. Anyone who has pictures, please send them for me to post so it's not just all pics of my kids. :) It was so nice to see everyone, and just know that even if you weren't there you were missed and probably talked about (all good stuff, I promise!)

Bill & Kim have recently upgraded the dishwasher and washing machine (thank you!)

Some of you have heard the snake of the year story - if not, for those with strong stomachs ask Bill or J to send you the video.

5 questions for Chapel Dillard Thompson

(Editorial note - I love this photo!)

1.    Where are you on the family tree?

I am the oldest daughter of Roger Dillard, Jr. and granddaughter of Mary Jane Coward Dillard and Roger Dillard, Sr.

2.    Do you have a favorite spot at GC?

My favorite spot at Grassy Creek is the front steps/sidewalk/front yard area.  That is where Rich and I were married.

3.    It's dinner time. Plate on your knees on the front steps or elbow to elbow at the dining room table?

From these two choices, I would choose to sit elbow to elbow at the dining room table.  Growing up, the dining room was for the adults and I always wondered what the adults were talking about.

4.    What's your vision of GC in the future?

My vision for Grassy Creek is that it continues to be a place where family members enjoy and make wonderful memories.  It is a special place and I am grateful to all the family members past and present for giving their time, talent and money to take care of it for the benefit of all of our extended family.

5.    If you could be any piece of GC furniture living or gone to the big burn pile in the sky, what would you be?

The dining room table - to hear all of the conversations!

On the horizon

There are no huge events coming up, but I like seeing the calendar sprinkled with small weekend trips.

Come up and just relax, or come get your hands dirty with whatever the project du jour is. Bill is up at the Creek most Thursdays. Jay is up most weekends. Give them a shout. You don't need to be handy to help.

Join the board!

If you're interested in getting more involved in the nuts and bolts behind Grassy Creek, please join us for our monthly board meetings, every 2nd Tuesday at 8:00AM. We help steer the budget, make sure the roof doesn't leak (too bad) and plan for Grassy Creek's future. Write to grassycreekcabinnc@gmail.com (which is really just Natalie A) to be added.
